"Words can be weapons against injustice," wrote Richard Wright. These words are evidenced by Wrights own career as a successful black writer emerging during a period of racial oppression and economic hardship. He used is short stories, novels, and poetry to show the world what Blacks had to endure. Even more important, however, are the ways Wright wove his themes of human fear, alienation, identity, and dread into the overall texture of his work.
